Monday June 2nd, 2014 Apple Keynote
This was the 25th Keynote that Apple has given. WWDC has changed so much since then. The youngest developer at the convention was only 13 years old.
OSX Yosemite -
OSX Mavericks now becomes OSX Yosemite. What's new with Yosemite? They call it "continuity." New discrete changes as well as new icons will be seen on the Macs. The title bar and windows are translucent along with the dock. Also a new "dark mode" comes to life with the menus and throughout the user interface.
Notification Center - will have a "day view" to see what's going on throughout the day and the addition of widgets will be added to the side also.
Spotlight - Improvements so it can launch apps and is more usable now. It also accesses sources from the internet too. You can also drag a result from spotlight right into a numbers or pages document. You gotta love all the drag and drop features with Macs. Map information, pictures, and reviews all within the spotlight search bar. Almost like it's replacing the internet browser.
iCloud Drive - Now can put anything you want on iCloud. It has folders and is more like Dropbox. Accessible from iCloud picker app on iOS devices and even accessible on Windows.
Mail Drop - Now mail can send large attachments up to 5 GB. If the other person has a mac they will see it like normal. If they are using a different account then it will be through a secure link.
Mark Up - Now you can write on your picture directly in your mail app. Doodle, note, and write on the pictures before you send it out. Finally it will be easy to sign a document and send it back quickly. :) Awesome! Create a zoom window, captions, or other text.
Safari - No more favorites bar. It's right in the search field when you click on it. Spotlight suggestions in the search bar now too. Subscribe easier to an RSS feed with a button at the top and they will show up in the side bar. Tab view will change the way we work with tabs. With new software improvements it will allow us to stream Netflix movies and have up to 2 hours longer battery life. That's good because mine basically dies after one movie. They let you bypass google now with safari. Scroll to see tabs or birds-eye view of the tabs.
Continuity - Transition between devices.
AirDrop - Finally works between all the devices.
Handoff - Devices allow you to switch more seamlessly between each other. iPad allows you to easily access what you are working on from your Mac.
Instant Hotspot - Mac will see your phone and it will automatically set up a hotspot for your phone.
SMS - Green bubble friends, people without iPhones, now can message and call to our computers through our phones. You can leave your phone plugged in across in another room and pick up the phone call from your iMac. Call the numbers from websites straight from your iMac.
Yosemite will be released Fall 2014 and will be FREE. Also something different, in the summer they will have a public beta program for the non-developer.
iOS 8 -
Notification Center - Interactive notifications so you can send a text right within the top pull down screen.
Mail - Swipe to delete a message now. Swipe a message that you are composing down and you can access the rest of your mail while it's holding the message you are working on at the bottom of the screen. Tap it to bring it back up. On iPad you can get suggestions right from within mail for calendar appointments without going to the app. Single swipe to mark as unread or flag.
Lock Screen - Accept calendar notifications right in the lock screen.
Home Button - Double tap on the home button to view favorite contacts and recent contacts with their picture above the windows.
Spotlight - Suggestions of apps, Wikipedia, directions, songs, restaurants, movies nearby and in iTunes.
Keyboard - Quick Type feature. Predictive typing suggestions. Faster and smarter due to context and personalized. The keyboard predicts differently depending on who you are texting.
Continuity - On iOS devices too.
Messages - Group messaging. Name threads. Add or remove people in conversation. Do not disturb depending on the thread. Share location with each other for different amounts of time limits. Tap to talk in text and video messaging. Pictures from thread all in one place too. Send audio by holding down and then sliding up to send audio. Send an audio text by putting it up to your ear and then taking it down. Almost like the old walkie talkies.
iCloud Drive - Open up a document saved in another app, edit it, them it stays where it was at and saves it. Also seems will be able to do more with apps like Dropbox or Box in Pages. Possibly syncing with third party apps than just relying on iCloud.
Enterprise - Device enrollment program.
HealthKit - One place to monitor all your health info. Health App allows access to other apps and hospital/doctor offices.
Family Sharing - Share photos, calendars, find friends, media and purchases of apps. Up to 6 family members that use the same credit card. Kids have to ask for permission to download apps.
Photos - iCloud allows ALL photos on all devices full resolution and original format. Search with photos by locations and dates. Smart editing for light, color, cropping and straightening. Some new features to come on the Mac early 2015.
iCloud Storage -
First 5GB free
20GB for $0.99 per month
200GB for $3.99 per month
Tiers available up to 1TB
Siri - Hey, Siri to use Siri without pressing a button. Song recognition and purchase in Siri. 22 more languages.
The rest of the new features are more related to developers so I will stop here. If you are a developer then you will probably already have watched the keynote. :)
